A surge of work begins! [Monochromia - Devlog #3]

It's that non-annual time of the year again!

After a woefully long passage of time, I am finally making another devlog!

This time, I got quite a bit of stuff to share!

Here are the general bullet points, and I will elaborate much more on all of these:

  • Biggest of all, I have nearly completed work on shifting my player code into that of a Finite State Machine!
  • I have made the camera much better
  • I have made more animations for the character (mostly still temporary most likely, but nonetheless, good!)
  • I have created a music track for the game!
  • The scenery is getting more love!
  • The prologue mapping is getting more progress
  • I got dialogue working! (kind of)
  • I got some visual effects (sort of) going!

--==--==--

First and most definitely far from least, is my work on the State Machine

I have finished the hardest part of it, actually writing the system…

(image showcases a little chunk of the code!)

Now I got to iron out the small issues and finish it up a little, then its fully finished! But it is about 80% of the way there.

This was by far the biggest thing prolonging my devlogs for so long, so now that this is out of the way, I can actually make them!

Secondly, I have made the camera a lot better for the movement.

Before, I just had a placeholder camera shoved in there that was centered on the player by default, but I got a much better system in place now where it locks to the screen!

Video (cannot embed)

(you might see some neat stuff in this video! I will explain these too! /  apologies for the low quality! I had to use the default recording software on my device)

I have to work out a few kinks with the system obviously, For instance, the camera kinda goes to the bottom left and then back to the locked place in the screen at the beginning of the scene, but it's pretty much done!

Also seen in the video, I have new animations for the player! These being: Jumping, Wallsliding, Ground-sliding! These are obviously probably gonna be edited later down the line to actually be smoother and more satisfying, but the base of these animations is here and that's good!

I also modified the running animation a little bit.

Interestingly, I have a music track for the game made now! It is for the prologue seen in the video (The audio in the video got messed up) and I think it turned out quite well! I made this in an hour on the first day of using the music software I used, so it can obviously be improved, but I think its good for now!

You can listen to it here: Remembrance (Internet Archive Upload)

Also seen in the video, The scenery and prologue-mapping is getting steady progress! The visuals are still not close to being finalized, but the base of them is here! And the prologue mapping will probably change a bit still, but the general outline of it is heading in a steady direction!

Also seen in the video (the third time saying this!) I have a bit of a dialogue before the gameplay! - It's kind of corny and vague right now, but it is some fine groundwork for better dialogue later in the polishing session of this section of the game!

And I also have some bloom testing going on inside the scenery right now - It's temporary right now, but the lighting will emulate something like this.

--

Overall, progress is going really well right now! I should be able to put these devlogs out more frequently now that I am mostly just working on the player moveset, scenery and mapping again, but until then, I'll see you later!

Have a lovely ham & cheese sandwich, and have a good morning, afternoon, day, evening, or night!
